Types of Glands and Functions

Hypothalamus:
The hypothalamus contains nerve cells that control the pituitary gland by producing chemicals that either stimulate or supress hormone secretions from the pituitary gland.

Pituitary:
The pituitary gland has an anterior lobe that regulates the thyroid, adrenals, and reproductive glands. It produces six hormones: somatotropic,thyroid-stimulating,adrenocorticotropic, two gonadotropic, and prolactin. The pituitary gland has an posterior lobe which helps control body balance through its effect on the kidneys and urine output. It secretes two hormones. These are antidiuretic hormone and oxytocin.

Thyroid:
The thyroid gland produces hormones that control the rate at which cells burn fuel. The main hormone procuded by the thyroid gland is throxine. This substance regluates the ways cells release energy from nutrients. It walso uses energy to create other substances. Included in this are proteins.

Parathyroid:
The parathyriod gland is a structure that produces parathroid hormone which regulates the body's calcium and phosphorus balance. They are the smallest gland in the Endcorine system. They are situated on the lobes of the thyroid gland.

Adrenal:
The adrenal gland has an adrenal cortex. It produces hormones that regulate salt and water balance in the body. The outer zone produces the horome aldosterone.  It inhibits the amunt of sodium in the urine.  This maintains the blood volume and blood pressure. In the inner and middle zone of the adrenal cortex the hormones hydrocortisone and corticosterone. It also produces a little amount of andrgogen hormones. The hyrdocortisone affects the metabolism of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates. It helps to recover from stress as well. Both hydrocortisone and corticosterone help in stopping inflammation.  The adrenal gland also has an adrenal medulla which produces adreneline.   It secretes the hormone epinephrine(adrenaline). It causses increase in heart action, increases respiration, raises blood pressure, and supresses the digestive process. It is known as the emergency hormone. They are both are located on the top of the kidneys.

Pineal Body:
The pineal gland regulates the wake-sleep cycle.

Reproductive:
The reproductive glands are called gonads. They are the only glands that are different for female and male. The hormnes released are responsible for the secondary sex characteristics. The play a major role in the process of reproduction.

Pituiatary Gland Importance

The pituitary gland is very important part of the Endocrine System and Reproductive System. This is because the pituitary gland secretes hormones that are used in the Reproductive System. It also produces hormones by the Endocrine System.
